A rugged loop through the Santan foothills. Named for historic gold mining activity in the area — the terrain shows it. Rocky, exposed, and relentless in heat.
Flat and uneventful in daylight. Would be a completely different trail at night — the name isn't accidental.
Deep in the Tonto — sparse trail markers, genuine solitude. The spring itself rewards the effort.
The lake itself is the destination — blue water against red canyon walls. Left the dog at home for this one.
